Neuropathy

With hundreds of different types identified, neuropathy, also known as nerve damage, takes place when nerves become damaged and no longer function normally. The intensity of symptoms may vary throughout the day and oftentimes be challenging for patients who have to manage harsh symptoms on their own. Some people deal with tingling, numbness, burning, shocking sensations, aching, or pain. Painful diabetic neuropathy is one form that impacts patients.

Meet our Neuropathy Specialist

Jeffrey Shall, MD is located at our Cleveland clinic and is known as one of the first surgeons to begin performing minimally invasive stabilization procedures. Dr. Shall’s specialty is minimally invasive surgery and neuropathy treatment and is known for his time at Laser Spine Institute.

Available Treatments

Different treatments are available depending on the type, severity, and location of nerve damage. At BEST Health System, neuropathy is one of the many conditions we treat with expert care. Our orthopaedic and neuropathy experts such as Dr. Shall at our Cleveland location, works with different treatments to to relieve pain.

We offer modern solutions for patients struggling with a range of neuropathy types including painful diabetic neuropathy. One option, spinal cord stimulators, sometimes referred to as (SCS), deliver electrical pulses to the spinal cord. These pulses can then block pain signals from being sent to the brain. This allows painful diabetic neuropathy patients to minimize the pain they experience due to their condition. For patients with leg pain, spinal cord stimulators can relieve 50% of the pain.

At BEST, we offer patients diagnostic testing with the SCS device so they can determine whether it is the right option for them. If patients find relief with it, we can implant a permanent device.

Diagnostic Facet Injection

Using a steroid medication that is injected into the site of pain such as a joint, this technique is used to relieve pain.

Spinal Cord Stimulator

A surgically implanted device that blocks unnecessary pain signals from being sent to the brain.

Conservative Therapy

Therapies to minimize pain, rebuild muscle, and regain function of the effected areas.

How To Know If You Have Neuropathy

Some symptoms include trouble walking or loss of balance, sores or infections that take too long to heal, burning, tingling, numbness, pain or trouble sensing temperatures in the feet or hands, and/or swelling of the feet or hands. Painful diabetic neuropathy is serious and if you have experienced any of these symptoms it’s time to get the care you need.

At our Outpatient Ambulatory Surgery Center, we provide many treatments and services based on our patient’s individual needs. If you are unsure if you have painful diabetic neuropathy or if you haven’t been diagnosed yet, BEST can help. First, we gather information about your condition and health history, perform an exam, perform diagnostic testing and then update the patient on the results and treatment options.
