Minimally Invasive Surgery
Traditional open spine surgery creates a 6 to 8-inch incision. Lengthy recovery time and long periods of activity precautions are necessary, along with higher rates of infection.
At BEST we perform minimally invasive spine surgery with a 1-inch incision, roughly the length of a quarter. Minimally Invasive surgery is a microsurgical procedure completed with more sophisticated instrumentation and refined techniques in comparison to traditional surgery.
Patients return home the same day of their surgery, have shorter recovery times, have less pain and damage to muscles. Because all surgeries take place in an ASC setting instead of a hospital, infection rates are averaged at .01% versus hospital stays that have infection rates at 1%.
The BEST days are ahead for our patients. The journey starts when the patient takes their first step to reclaim their active lifestyle, gets back to work, daily activities, and gets back meaningful connections with loved ones.
Types of Minimally Invasive Surgery
Decompression Procedures
Decompression surgeries are performed to relieve pressure on pinched nerves in the spine. The goal is to reduce symptoms like pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling that occur as a result of nerve root compression. During minimally invasive decompression surgery, the doctor will make a small incision in the spine and use a camera and small surgical tools to remove pieces of a disc, bone, or bone spur that’s pressing against the nerves.
There are several types of decompression procedures.
- Foraminotomy
- Laminotomy
- Discectomy
- Facet thermal ablation
