What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that affects damaged nerves and can develop from a number of conditions. When a nerve becomes damaged, they are unable to communicate with other nerves or they send false signals. When the brain is unable to communicate with the nerves properly it can make even simple tasks difficult.

Although, the exact cause of neuropathy is unknown there are conditions that make an individual more likely to develop this condition. Neuropathy is commonly caused by nerve damage or diabetes because of high blood sugar which can lead to nerve damage. Individuals with chronic illnesses such as lupus, arthritis, and other autoimmune disorders can also cause neuropathy.

Our Cleveland Clinic specializes in neuropathy offering treatment options for those affected by it. Neuropathy treatment will vary from patient to patient and is dependent on the nerves that are damaged as well as the severity of this damage. However, there are general treatment options that can be employed to treat any form of neuropathy. These treatments include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Antidepressants that act on the nervous system to ease pain and discomfort
  • Biofeedback
  • Creams you put on your skin
  • Pain medicines
  • Pain Pump Implant
  • Relaxation training
  • Spinal Cord Stimulator
  • Transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy

Neuropathy Treatment BEST Has to Offer

Our Cleveland Clinic is just one of four locations our patients can get the treatment they need. We also have locations in Cincinnati, Lyndhurst, and Westlake. BEST prides itself in our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment but we also take great pride in patient care. We want our patients to have the BEST experience possible. We offer imaging such as MRIs and X-rays on site and treatments such as physical therapy and our minimally invasive procedures.

Conservative treatment options are usually enough to treat neuropathy but there are some cases that require surgery. As a leader in minimally invasive procedures, we understand the stresses of deciding on surgery. However, there are many benefits to minimally invasive surgery that traditional open neck or spine surgery doesn’t offer. The first is the small incision and muscle-sparing techniques used in a minimally invasive procedure. The incision will typically be less than an inch which will eliminate the need for an overnight hospital stay, reduce recovery time, and limits the risk of complication. We see surgery as a last resort treatment option but if you have tried conservative therapies to no avail then our minimally invasive surgery may be just what you need to get you the quality of life you deserve.
