Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation

Vestibular Balance and Rehabilitation

What is Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation?

Vestibular and balance rehabilitation, or rehab, is physical therapy developed to improve balance and function for patients with vertigo and other conditions. The vestibular system is part of the inner ear and helps control our sense of balance and spatial awareness.

Disorders of the vestibular system can result in severe dizziness, known as vertigo, which can have an effect on the quality of life.

By working with a physical therapist to create a vestibular and balance rehabilitation program, patients can improve their balance and movements while learning techniques to prevent and manage dizzy spells. To learn more about this form of therapy, read the following overview.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact BEST Health System at any time.

Vestibular Disorders and Vertigo

The vestibular system is a series of canals in the inner ear that are filled with fluid. As we change direction and move around, the state of this fluid is altered and signals are sent to the brain to help us stay balanced.

Vestibular disorders can develop due to a number of factors, including the fluid levels or the signals to the brain becoming disrupted.

Causes for this can include:

  • Ear infections
  • Poor circulation and cardiovascular problems
  • Buildup of fluid
  • Migraine headaches
  • Concussions and other brain injuries
  • Side effects of medication

People may also experience balance problems due to soft tissue injuries and conditions such as arthritis that can severely restrict movement. The cause or condition contributing to dizziness or vertigo may require a medical diagnosis and testing such as an MRI or X-ray.

Vestibular and Balance Rehab: What to Expect

Vestibular and balance rehab will initially begin with an evaluation and balance tests to determine the patient’s current condition. From there, a therapist can work with the patient to develop a vestibular and balance rehab program that includes:

  • Balance training
  • Posture development exercises
  • Eye movement training
  • Other techniques

Sessions can vary depending on the patient and the specific cause of vertigo or imbalance. Patients will also be given education on how to recognize and counteract dizzy spells and at-home exercises that can be performed.

Vestibular and balance rehab cost

Vestibular and balance rehab costs typically depend on the number of sessions, the need for additional treatments, and insurance coverage. BEST Health System works with Medicare patients, most private health insurances, as well as workers’ compensation and personal injury cases. One of our representatives can answer your questions about the cost of treatments like vestibular and balance rehab.

At BEST Health System, we provide a range of nonsurgical treatment options for people dealing with debilitating pain and mobility problems.
