Pinched Nerve

Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve is a term that describes the compression of a nerve root in the spinal canal due to an abnormality of the spine. This condition typically develops in the cervical (neck) or lumbar (lower back) and radiates pain into the arm or leg, respectively. Pinched nerves are often caused by preexisting spine conditions, such as bulging disc, which causes the components of the spine to move out of their allotted space and into the spinal canal. This results in a nerve root being compressed, which leads to a number of symptoms.

A nerve root is part of the central nervous system that is hosted in the spinal canal. When compressed, the brain receives a signal that there is pain at the site of the nerve. In severely pinched nerves, the brain might receive a strong signal of pain and determine that the entire right leg and foot are in pain. Additionally, the nerve roots are responsible for sending feelings to the extremities. If the nerve root is pinched, it might not be able to send feeling signals to the right leg or foot, which would result in numbness or tingling sensation.

Causes

In many cases, pinched nerves are a result of age-related conditions. These conditions cause spinal anatomy to become displaced and narrow the spinal column, which can lead to a pinched nerve. A pinched nerve can lead to severe nerve pain as well as other neuropathic symptoms.

Common spine conditions that can cause a pinched nerve includes:

  • Herniated and bulging discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal arthritis
  • Bone spurs

If you already have one of these conditions, you may be at risk of developing a pinched nerve. By meeting with your doctor, you may be able to learn about preventative measures you can take.

Treatments

Upon diagnosis of a pinched nerve, a doctor will typically suggest beginning treatment through conservative methods. These methods include:

  • Medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Alternating hot and cold compresses
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Epidural steroid injections

If a patient has explored different conservative options and does not experience any form of relief after several weeks, they may be a candidate for surgery.

Symptoms

Nerve compression can interfere with the normal functioning of a nerve, causing both local and traveling symptoms. A pinched nerve will cause different symptoms depending on the location. Common symptoms include:

  • Shooting or burning pain
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Muscle weakness
