How It Works
Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) treatment is a cutting-edge therapy that has been proven effective in managing chronic pain conditions that we provide to our patients here at BEST. By implanting a small device near the spinal cord, SCS works by delivering electrical impulses directly to the nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals to the brain.
This interrupts the pain pathway and replaces it with a tingling sensation that effectively blocks or reduces the perception of pain. For patients suffering from chronic back, leg, or arm pain that has not responded well to other treatments, SCS can offer significant relief and improve overall quality of life.
Additionally, SCS is reversible and adjustable, allowing both patients and physicians to fine-tune treatment settings as needed for optimal pain management. With advancements in technology and medical research, SCS continues to be a valuable option for individuals seeking long-term relief from debilitating chronic pain. Who Spinal Cord Stimulation Works For
Spinal Cord Stimulation treatment is an alternative response to pain for patients who have chronic pain due to a range of issues. From chronic pain post-accident, or neuropathy damage, advanced chronic pain, failed back surgery syndrome, and so many other conditions can be treated with SCS.
The following conditions may respond well to stimulation therapy:
- Chronic back pain
- Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS)
- Sciatica
- Spinal cord injuries
- Arachnoiditis
- Non-spine related conditions: angina, diabetic neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, complex regional pain syndrome, post-amputation pain
Not only does this treatment help improve the lives of BEST patients who struggle with treatment-resistant pain, but it allows them to find solutions and relief without a pharmacological answer. This also helps reduce medication dependency and regain control over one’s lifestyle and limitations due to pain. BEST Health System recognizes patients’ preferences for non-drug-related treatment options, and we recommend this form of treatment.
Treatment With BEST
If your doctor at BEST approves a spinal cord stimulator implant, the first step will be a trial period to determine if this form of treatment will be effective. The trial period lasts for approximately one week. Instead of implanting a generator, your surgeon will place electrodes and lead wires under your skin and connect them to an external generator. The trial procedure is minimally invasive and doesn’t take long to complete.
If you’re living with chronic pain that hasn’t responded to prior treatment, reach out to BEST Health System to find out if you’re a good candidate for spinal cord stimulation. Please call us today to speak with a dedicated patient coordinator.
