What is Neuromodulation?
Neuromodulation is a modern treatment option that helps patients achieve relief from chronic pain conditions like failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). This minimally invasive procedure involves implanting a small device in the lumbar spine with lead wires that attach to the spinal cord to deliver mild electrical impulses. This stimulation blocks pain signals from reaching the brain, ultimately helping patients lead more comfortable, pain-free lives.
This therapeutic treatment option is also referred to as spinal cord stimulation, as the stimulation occurs on the spinal cord, which carries messages from the brain to the rest of the body. Similar to other chronic pain conditions, failed back surgery syndrome often results from a nerve-related issue, including scar tissue formation, recurrent spinal disc herniation, and altered joint mobility.
In addition to treating failed back surgery syndrome, neuromodulation is also utilized in the treatment of neuropathy (nerve damage), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and other forms of debilitating pain. If you experience persistent pain months after undergoing spine surgery, you may have failed back surgery syndrome, also known as persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS). Common Failed Back Surgery Syndrome Symptoms
Failed back surgery syndrome comes with a variety of symptoms–from emotional ones to physical disabilities. Understanding the symptoms associated with this condition can help you be a more involved patient, ultimately improving treatment outcomes.
Commons failed back surgery symptoms include:
- Chronic Back or Leg Pain: Persistent pain in the lower back, legs, or neck, depending on the area of surgery, often similar to the original symptoms.
- Nerve Pain: Burning, tingling, or shooting pain caused by nerve damage or irritation during or after surgery.
- Limited Mobility: Difficulty moving or performing daily activities due to pain or stiffness.
- Muscle Spasms: Uncontrolled muscle contractions around the surgical site.
- Increased Pain with Movement: Pain that worsens with physical activity, sitting, or standing for extended periods.
- Persistent Numbness or Weakness: Lack of sensation or strength in the extremities due to nerve compression or damage.
- Emotional Distress: Depression, anxiety, or frustration caused by unresolved pain and decreased quality of life.
- Dependence on Pain Medications: Relying heavily on medications to manage symptoms can also indicate that surgery did not resolve the underlying issue.
If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, it is important to know that relief is achievable. Interventional Pain Management Physicians work with patients to understand their symptoms and recovery goals to determine an effective treatment plan consisting of minimally invasive therapies like neuromodulation and lifestyle modifications.
