The Difference Between Neuropathy and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Neuropathy and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) are both conditions that involve nerve dysfunction and chronic pain, but they have distinct causes, symptoms, and underlying mechanisms.
Neuropathy refers to nerve damage that can result from various conditions such as diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), infections, injuries, or autoimmune diseases. It typically affects the peripheral nerves, causing symptoms like numbness, tingling, burning pain, muscle weakness, and loss of sensation. Neuropathy can be localized to a specific nerve (mononeuropathy) or widespread (polyneuropathy). The pain in neuropathy is often described as burning or stabbing and may worsen at night.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that usually develops after an injury, surgery, or trauma, even if the initial damage is minor. It is believed to involve abnormal nerve signaling, inflammation, and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Unlike neuropathy, CRPS often presents with severe pain, changes in skin color and temperature, swelling, and abnormal sweating in the affected limb. It may also cause stiffness, weakness, and abnormal hair or nail growth.
The key difference between these two conditions results from direct nerve damage due to an underlying medical condition, whereas CRPS relates to nervous system dysregulation, often following an injury.
Finding Relief from These Conditions
Finding relief from these conditions involves a combination of conservative therapies and sometimes minimally invasive procedures.
Oftentimes, patients can find relief through a course of nonsurgical approaches including physical therapy, anti-inflammatory pain medications, diet adjustments, and limiting smoking/drinking. It is often recommended that patients try these therapies for a month and consult their doctor if they do not notice a difference.
Minimally invasive surgery is another option for those with neuropathy or complex regional pain syndrome. This involves a surgically implanted device in the lumbar spine that has lead wires that connect to the spinal cord. The device will send tiny electrical pulses to the spinal cord to block pain signals from reaching the brain. This is an excellent option for patients with nerve pain who do not want to undergo traditional surgery.
